The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators is commonly acknowledged as the premier psychedelic LP. When it was released in August of 1966, “psychedelic” was a word being murmured by only the hippest of musicians. The 13th Floor Elevators proudly described their music as psychedelic and were more than eager to bring the concept of “psychedelia” to the public conciseness. To deter the chance of anyone misunderstanding their agenda an essay addressing mans recently discovered ability to experience altered mental states was included on the album’s back cover. Rock & Roll, baby! In recent years, a few predecessors to The Psychedelic Sounds of the 13th Floor Elevators have been determined psychedelic (my personal vote for first psychedelic album goes to The Seeds self-titled debut – April 1966). And that is without addressing early experiments that have been cited as the roots of psychedelic music (The Yardbirds ‘For Your Love & The Beatles ‘Norwegian Wood’ among them). But The 13th Floor Elevators were the first to publicly refer to the music as psychedelic. They associated the psychedelic movement with a look (the swirls of multiple colors we have all come to associate with the later 60’s) and a philosophy that would soon lead to the hippy ethos of peace and love and dropping out. more...
